Rory Simmons

Lead and Solo Trumpet, Flugel Horn, composer

Rory Simmons is one of the most creative and dynamic young trumpet-players on the British Jazz scene. Originally from Bodmin, Cornwall, he moved to London in 2000 to study at Trinity College of Music. Since being in London, Rory has been working busily throughout the country with his original projects as well as in demand for free-lance work with other musicians. His own projects include his quartet, Curve- a chordless quintet and a 10-piece large ensemble featuring some of his original compositions.

Rory has performed throughout Europe, North America, South America, Asia and South Africa as well as appearing in some of the most prestigious venues in England country including the Vortex, Royal Festival Hall, Ronnie Scotts, CCA, Arts Depot, Royal Albert Hall, The Spitz, and Pizza on the Park including a recent radio broadcast on Radio Resonance FM with Jarmila Xymena Gorna. He has performed at most major international jazz festivals including London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham International Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Saratoga Springs Jazz Festival, Antibes, Umbria Jazz and Marciac Jazz Festival. Recent performances with Jamie Cullum have included  the Roseland Ballroom- New York, The Wiltern- LA, Tower of London Festival, The Zenith- Paris, Tempodrom- Berlin and Shibuya AX- Tokyo.

In 2006, Rory received a joint commission from the Institute of Education and UCL to write a programme of music for a large ensemble involving classical and jazz elements, with different aspects of improvisational approach. This resulted in the conception of his project Fringe Magnetic, featuring musicians from the LOOP collective and classically trained musicians. also premiering his original compositions at Blackheath Concert Halls and the Royal Festival Hall Foyer.
Rory has worked with Jamie Cullum, Robin Jones King Salsa, Mike Garrick Jazz Britannia Orchestra, Synergy, Grand Union Orchestra, Fire Collective, Arrange of Space, National Youth Jazz Orchestra Maria Rita, Omar Puente, Geoff Gascoyne, Martin Speake, Mandingo, Arnie Somogyi, Guy Barker, Byron Wallen, Mark Lockheart, Barak Schmool and Bill Watrous.
His experience in education involves private and group teaching throughout London and the surrounding area, including work at the Academy of Contemporary Music and private schools in south London. He has been involved in jazz and world music workshops, big band coaching and demonstrations throughout the country.
