Tim Smart is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, the Institute of Education, University of London, and the University of Greenwich. His playing career is massively varied, taking in live and studio work with The Specials, Elbow, The Kooks, Prince Buster, Art Brut, Esser, Down To The Bone, The National Symphony Orchestra, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, the Tom Richards Jazz Orchestra, King Salsa and the Bollywood Brass Band!

Tim’s studio recording work is wide-ranging and includes live recordings with The Specials, The Kooks (Parlophone Records), Prince Buster (Island Records), The Go! Tim’s live work includes the UK and International tour dates with iconic ska band The Specials, Prince Buster, Elbow, Esser, Art Brut, Mint Royale, Down To The Bone, Captive State, Royal Showdown, Mr Gone, Afro Elements, Chantz Powell, Atar and The Funkadrome, IDMC and Chris Rambling’s PsychoYogi. His Latin work includes Robin Jones King Salsa (for whom Tim also is the Musical Director), Salsa Dura, Jan Y Su Salsa, and Cosa Latina. He has performed Classical Indian, African, Chinese, Israeli, Bhangra and Bollywood music as lead trombone for the Grand Union Orchestra, the Bollywood Brass Band, and Neshama. His big band work includes the Gwilym Simcock Big Band, the Tom Richards Jazz Orchestra, the Syd Laurence Orchestra, the Andy Prior Big Band, Glenn Miller France, the State 51 Swing Orchestra, the James O’Carroll Big Band, the Jimmy Cannon Big Band, NYJO and the Young Guns Big Band. 

Tim has worked on many West End and touring musicals, including La Cage Aux Folles (Playhouse Theatre), The Wizard of Oz (QEH), Acorn Antiques (UK Tour), Acorn Antiques (Haymarket Theatre), 42nd Street (UK Tour), Annie (UK Tour), Time’s Up (Yvonne Arnaud Theatre), and Annie Get Your Gun (UK Tour). His classical experience includes the National Symphony Orchestra, the London Concert Orchestra, the Wallace Collection, the Avenue A Ensemble, and Magdala Opera. He has also appeared on numerous TV shows including Top of the Pops (with Prince Buster and Mint Royale), Des and Mel, Parkinson, (both with Chantz Powell) the NME Awards (with Elbow) and Later on Jools Holland, Glastonbury, T in The Park and Oxegen festivals (with The Specials), and recorded soundtracks for the Paul O’Grady show and the film ‘Black Water Transit’ starring Laurence Fishburne 

Tim is an active arranger of horn and string parts, and has worked with The Kooks (Warchild Album, 2009) Down To The Bone (Future Boogie, 2009), Cathy Davey (Tales of Silversleeve, 2008), Art Brut (Live Set), Chris Sheldrick and the Wallace Collection.

Tim is also active in the educational field, leading workshops for Magdala Opera, the Grand Union Orchestra, the Education Group, the Oxford Philomusica, and the Bollywood Brass Band. His teaching experience also includes the Blackheath Conservatoire, the Fenland Music Academy, St Paul’s Cathedral School, and Highgate School. He was also a Programme Leader and Musicianship Tutor for the British Academy of New Music, teaching at FE Levels 3 and 4. Tim currently holds a PGCE (FENTO) from the University of Greenwich, an MA in Music Education from the Institute of Education, University of London, and in addition to his busy playing career is also working towards a PhD in Music Education.
